Christmas term project

I took some of mine own pictures in the chiaroscuro style. It took me a few attempts to get the light and dark contrast right. The top photo is the one I based my large painting on.

I started it in acrylic on a big board. I primed it in black first as the picture is mostly dark. It took a lot of layers of white before I could go into detail on the material. The colours are all shades of whites and greys so I was worried that the painting might look a bit boring but I'm pleased with the outcome.

Christmas term project

I tried mono printing one of my images of material but I didn't think it looked very effective.
This is a painting on top of photos from a newspaper magazine. I painted the figure in the chiaroscuro style of light out of darkness. I like how he seems to be coming out of the the mans coat as well.
I wanted to experiment with different ways of drawing material so I did one in biro and another with newspaper. I don't think the newspaper collage works as well because the differences in shade aren't that obvious.

Christmas term project

I liked the folds of material in my previous photos so took some more of material. I liked the light and shade and copied a merge of some of my new photos in pencil.

The style of material was like that of renaissance artists like Caravaggio who used the chiaroscuro technique of lighting in their pictures. I copied part of a Caravaggio painting.

Christmas term project

I wasn't really sure what to do at the start of this project. I took some photos but didn't know what to do with them. I liked the image of a girl in a red coat in a grey environment, in places you wouldnt expect her to be.

I tried to develop it into a Banksy style iconic image. However I didn't like the outcome and thought it was a bit simple.

We also looked at Giorgio De Chirico's pieces, and did an altered copy of one. I included modern american symbols such as MacDonalds.

These are samples of different techniques and colours used on some of my other prints. Such as putting string in the printing press and putting more than one colour on the same print.
This is a close up of the application of paint on one of my etchings.

These two prints are my favourite of the ones I did because the light and dark contrasts are good.

This is my etching plate. The shading is not very clear as it was all done with cross hatching and how I put paint on. It is also quite dirty as has been used.

We then went on etching. We had to take photos that were of objects lit in a cardboard box. I liked the figure and sheep skull shapes best so tried to put them in most of my photos. We used the photos for our etching plates.

This was the image I used for my plate.

This is a penicil copy of Escher's picture of hands. I prefer it to some of his other pieces because it includes optical illusion but also has really nice tonal shading.

In the same project I practiced some observational drawing of objects from my house

This is a close up of the technique I used for the background of my painting. I scraped the paint on using cardboard to give it texture.

This is the finished painting.

My picture looks similar in style (and the background which I used aspects of) to Max Ernst's 'Elephant of Celebes'. His painting looks more animal like but I think they are both equally surreal.

Found objects

The two pictures above are from the first project we did at the beginning of the year. The photos are close up of sections of the overall painting. The project focused on found objects.

This is the unfinished version of my final piece. It quite abstract but also has aspects of surrealism as you can see the objects take the form of what appears to be machinery but also slightly animalistic. The landscape adds to the surrealism of the painting and gives it perspective.
